The race for the City Council's District 10 seat is the classic case of a grass-roots political newcomer burning shoe leather to challenge a candidate who has risen through the ranks of neighborhood and community leadership. In the campaign to grab the open seat left by term-limited Councilman Chip Haass, Rey de los Santos, 32, said he is the forward-thinking candidate with no political ties who has the time to commit to a hectic council schedule. "I'm a very grass-roots campaign," said de los Santos, an attorney. "My biggest fundraiser is one huge labor organization called myself." A pilot in the Air Force Reserve, de los Santos said he applied for three city boards and never received a response. Then he decided to stop complaining and do something about it.

The One, The Only, Planet Earth
"The One, The Only, Planet Earth" is a direct result of my desire to borrow, not take, from this Earth. I plan to be "teachy," not "preachy." I plan no great debates about global warming or ozone depletion or emissions of any kind. Comparison Shopping In Green I do plan to share my experiences as I navigate a world of products and actions deemed good for the planet and its' population. I plan to tell you what new cleaning products I've tried, and how well those products performed. I'll buy the organic pet food and share if the pets actually eat it, and if it makes as big a difference in their health as it does my wallet. I'll shop independent venues such as Wild Oats in Williamstown and Spice 'N Nice in Bennington, Vt. as well as the growing mainstream supermarket "organic" and "natural" product aisles and let you in on the items that lived up to expectations and those that fall short.

If we are to turn this trend around, we will need to create a culturally supportive environment for regular exercise." The Good News We're making progress.
Profits, And A Protest
Investors applauded Aetna's 8 percent jump in net income and higher 2007 earnings outlook Thursday, but more than 40 protesters outside the company's Hartford headquarters said health insurance profits are making them sick. As Aetna's stock rose, protesters wore blue hospital gowns over their clothes and carried small white paper bags that said "Use This Barf Bag if Aetna's profits are making you sick." They were dramatizing their argument that health insurers' profits and executive pay are making coverage unaffordable and hurting access to care for many people. .
