It seems wrong to cut down redwood trees. And I think that the medical excuse is just that, an excuse. It is pretty likely that the trees were in place before these people bought their homes, and now they've decided, for one reason or another, they want more lawn, more space to expand their houses, or whatever, so the trees have to go. These trees should not be just a convenience for homeowners' whims.

It's as ridiculous as someone moving into a home by the railroad tracks and then complaining about the noise from the trains (although that happens too).

The redwoods were there first. If you didn't like them, you shouldn't have bought the house. If you planted them, well, live with your decision.

Kudos to Palo Alto's Emslie and Doktor for holding firm to keep redwood trees.

Every School Every Thursday -- Johnston

Beaver Creek students will be participating in two service projects during the month of November. One service project will be connected to the PTO book fair, held in mid-November. Students will be asked to donate coins, and the proceeds will help provide books for students at Beaver Creek who may not be able to purchase a book at the book fair. The other service project will be a canned-food drive for Combat Hunger.

Beaver Creek's Character Counts pillar of the month is citizenship. Students will review ways to be good citizens at home, at school and in the community. Beaver Creek's second "Growing Good Character" assembly will focus on citizenship. This assembly will be held in late November.

WMC ban on tobacco finds little resistance

Winchester — The corridors of Winchester Medical Center have become a second home to Katherine Woods.

Woods, 21, is the daughter of Mary Mahmke, a long-term patient at the medical center.

She has made frequent visits to WMC for the past three years — which included smoke breaks outside the facility.

On Thursday, Woods noticed that the designated smoking areas where she used to light up were gone.

Their disappearance is part of the medical center’s new tobacco-free policy.

UAW Workers At Ford Ratify 4-Year Contract

DETROIT -- United Auto Workers members have overwhelmingly ratified a contract with Ford.

The deal sets lower pay for some newly hired workers and puts the company's huge retiree health care debt into a union-run trust.

The UAW, which represents about 54,000 workers at Ford, said 79 percent of those voting favored the pact.

Workers at General Motors and Chrysler have already ratified similar deals. But unlike those two automakers, the UAW didn't go on strike against Ford. .
