| Firefighters like new smoke alarm
Fire officials say the newest and best type of smoke alarm detects both high-flaming and smoldering fires with equal effectiveness. But not many people know about it. The new smoke alarms can sense everything from the high-heat fire of a tipped candle to the slow burn of a dropped cigarette. .
Green Myth-Busting: Biodiesel
Editor's note: Our first installment of Green Myth-Busting comes from GO's resident biofuels expert Clayton Bodie Cornell. As I've come to expect from Clayton, he's covered the subject very thoroughly! The poster-child for biofuels, biodiesel, is easily the most popular alternative fuel available. Despite the best efforts of biodiesel enthusiasts, the fuel is still engulfed in a morass of misinformation. This Myth-Buster is intended to dispel some of the most common myths associated with using biodiesel - the myths that may keep you from using the fuel. In case you're new to the topic, biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from plant oils and occasionally animal fat. It can be made from both used and unused sources of oil, such as freshly-pressed soybean oil, or oil left-over from the deep fryer at your local burger joint.

Cereal offenders targeted in children's health drive
THE latest weapon in the growing arsenal against misleading advertising and bogus health claims is being aimed at children's breakfast cereals. The consumer rights group Choice will launch its interactive database "Food For Kids" today, aimed at arming parents with the type of nutritional information some food manufacturers would rather not discuss. Claims such as "healthy source of vitamins and minerals" and "high in energy" will be translated into a breakdown of how much fat, salt and sugar is in children's food. Choice is focusing on children's breakfast cereals for the launch, saying about 70 per cent of products in a market that directly targets children under the age of 12 are closer to confectionery than health food. Only five of the 29 products tested had the recommended amount of fibre.

Question: When your pet dog or cat dies, what is the proper and legal way to dispose of the animal? I have no idea what to do when this happens. Answer: Many people do have their pets cremated through their veterinarians, but the simplest, legal way, albeit not one many animal lovers might care to opt for, is to put the body out for pickup by a city refuse crew. Dead pets also may be taken to the Hawaiian Humane Society, where they will be disposed of for "a small fee." If there is a health concern -- i.e., the animal could be considered infectious waste -- then it would need to be disposed of following state Department of Health guidelines, said Arlene Buchholz, veterinary medical officer with the department. That would preferably entail cremation at a pet crematory, she said.
Awards: Brittain Award Winner Named
With just three weeks of school to go, Emory medical student Arun Mohan said he was "shocked and humbled" to learn this past weekend that he had been named the winner of the 2007 Marion Luther Brittain Award, the University's highest student honor. Mohan, an MD candidate at the School of Medicine who earned an MBA from the Goizueta Business School last year, plans to pursue a career as a physician-advocate. He is slated to begin his residency at Harvard Medical School's Cambridge Health Alliance in June. The Brittain Award is presented each year at Commencement to a graduate who has demonstrated exemplary service to both the University and the greater community without expectation of recognition. Candidates are required to demonstrate a strong character, meritorious service and sense of integrity.
The Kissaway Trail
Last year, the consistently excellent Bella Union label gave us Howling Bells and Midlake. Now, we get their first treasure of 2007. Named as one of NME's 10 favourite new bands at this year's South By Southwest festival, The Kissaway Trail are an all-male five-piece from Odense, Denmark who have a penchant for wearing pink cravats onstage - never a bad thing. They also make a savagely beautiful noise that recalls The Flaming Lips on the joyous pop of 'La La Song' and the late, lamented Grandaddy on 'Tracy'. And we've saved the most obvious comparison 'til last, but The Kissaway Trail really do evoke the spirit of Arcade Fire at times, especially on the savagely beautiful 'Smother + Evil = Hurt', which is the equal of anything on 'Neon Bible'. If you're a fan of that record, you'd do well to check out these great Danes.
New genetic risk factors for type 2 diabetes
In the most comprehensive look at genetic risk factors for type 2 diabetes to date, a U.S.-Finnish team, working in close collaboration with two other groups, has identified at least four new genetic variants associated with increased risk of diabetes and confirmed existence of another six. The findings of the three groups, published simultaneously today in the online edition of the journal Science, boost to at least 10 the number of genetic variants confidently associated with increased susceptibility to type 2 diabetes , a disease that affects more than 200 million people worldwide. "This achievement represents a major milestone in our battle against diabetes. It will accelerate efforts to understand the genetic risk factors for this disease, as well as explore how these genetic factors interact with each other and with lifestyle factors," said National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Elias A.
